Care Instructions: Script for Single or Multiple Voice
A strictly limited edition of Cynthia Troup’s incantatory text
Who remembers the thirteenth godmother from Sleeping Beauty, the uninvited guest by whose curse the princess fell asleep for a hundred years? Now she washes, waiting for her chance to ‘make another better wish’, when, finally, the royal child awakens. Whether as a lone voice or a chorus of knowing women, Care Instructions delves deeply into rhyme and sing-song to consider the materials, size and cut of remorse, love, forgiveness.
Directed by Margaret Cameron, performed by Jane Bayly, Liz Jones, and Caroline Lee, Aphids’ production of Care Instructions premiered at Melbourne’s La Mama theatre in November 2008. In July 2009, to coincide with a season at the Malthouse Tower Theatre, Aphids published the script as a handmade limited edition, in collaboration with letterpress artist Carolyn Fraser at Idlewild Press.
A cross between theatre and performance poetry, the piece creates a dream-like laundry where women’s work becomes women’s play and cultural archetypes of the feminine are gleefully subverted. Troup has obviously drawn inspiration from Gertrude Stein. Care Instructions partakes of the same whirling repetitions, defiant illogic, and linguistic playfulness as Stein’s fiction and poetry.
