BANGKOK RESIDENCY Amrita Hepi x APHIDS

“Myth is the threshold of history.” — Saidiya V. Hartman

In April, APHIDS x Amrita Hepi will undertake a research trip and first development of a new work in Bangkok with local collaborators. This is a new performance about the choreography of destiny, investigating historical places marked by power as exercised through infrastructure: places such as palaces, power stations, waterways, and digital architectures. Some of these places nurture and sustain; others extract and exploit — many do both.

Using Amrita’s signature mix of humour, dance, affect, and performativity, this work will begin with a text written by Amrita and her collaborators. At the core of this process is Amrita’s ongoing methodology and question: how can text do something dance cannot, and how can dance operate beyond text — creating atmosphere, working memory, and a logic that exceeds language?

APHIDS acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Boon wurrung peoples on whose lands we live and work. Sovereignty was never ceded and we pay our respect to past, present, and future Aboriginal elders and community, and to their long and rich history of artmaking on this Country.
