ODYSSEY ODYSSEY

ODYSSEY ODYSSEY invites experimental artists and collectives crafting bold, innovative new works to share a 15 minute work in progress as part of APHIDS’ ODYSSEY ODYSSEY at Naarm Ngarrgu Library on Saturday 3 May 2025.

Applications closed on 24 March and we will be announcing the selected works very soon.


F.A.Q

What is expected of me if I am selected?

Use the fee to develop an experimental artwork.
Present a 15-minute excerpt from your work at the event on 3rd May 2-4pm.
Attend an artist briefing and check in 21 April (exact time & location TBC)
Attend a technical rehearsal the morning of  the 3rd May.
Participate in a panel-style discussion hosted by APHIDS at the event.

Promote the showing to your networks.

Is the fee different if I work with more artists?

No, the fee remains the same regardless of group size.

IS THIS INTENDED FOR EMERGING OR ESTABLISHED ARTISTS?

Both!

Can you provide a technical operator?

We will provide one sound operator, and a couple of hand held microphones. If your work requires additional technical support, you must bring your own operator.

Can you provide additional technical equipment?

No, we can only provide what is listed. If your work requires complex technical setups, please contact us in advance.

How will I get paid?

Payments will be made via invoice:

75% before the event and 25% after the event

Can interstate or international artists apply?

Yes, but we cannot provide travel or additional support.

What if I am not an Australian citizen and don’t have an ABN?

Get in touch with us to discuss alternative arrangements.

My project involves something messy or potentially dangerous. Can I apply?

Yes, but please contact us first to discuss feasibility.

Will you provide rehearsal space?

No, rehearsal space is not provided.

Can I propose a site-specific work or present at another venue?

Your broader idea may be site specific, but all works must present a 15 min excerpt at the official showing event.

Can I spend the funding on equipment instead of artist fees?

Yes, as long as it directly supports the project you are presenting.

Do I need to submit a budget?

No.

Do I need to submit an acquittal report?

No.

Can my project be funded by other sources?

Yes, as long as it doesn’t prevent you from participating in this opportunity.

Who selects the artists?

A panel of APHIDS staff and collaborators will review applications.

Can I apply as a group or collective?

Yes, but you must nominate one main contact.

DO I NEED TO PROVIDE MY OWN PROPS OR MATERIALS?

Yes, APHIDS does not cover additional production costs.

CAN I APPLY WITH MORE THAN ONE PROJECT?

Yes, but only one will be selected.

CAN I APPLY IF I HAVE WORKED WITH APHIDS BEFORE?

Yes.

WHAT IF I CANNOT ATTEND THE BRIEFING SESSION?

 It is a requirement

CAN MY WORK INCLUDE AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION?

Yes, but let us know in your application.

WILL APHIDS PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION OF THE SHOW?

We may take event photos, but full documentation is the artists responsibility.

CAN I APPLY IF I AM A STUDENT?

Yes.

WILL I RECEIVE FEEDBACK IF I AM UNSUCCESSFUL?

No. We do not offer individual feedback due to high application volumes.

WHAT IF MY WORK IS UNFINISHED OR ABSTRACT?

That’s fine—this opportunity is for ideas at any stage.

CAN I SELL MERCHANDISE OR PROMOTE MY OTHER WORK AT THIS EVENT?

Maybe. Let us know in your application.

CAN MY WORK BE DURATIONAL OR INSTALLATION BASED?

It must be suitable for a 15-minute presentation format.
